Local SEO checklist for South African service businesses

Start with accurate business details, useful service pages and a working enquiry journey. This checklist helps established service businesses identify practical improvements before expanding their marketing.

Reviewed 25 October 2026 · Based on the Google guidance linked below.

Make your real business easy to find

Start with the details a customer needs: your business name, services, contact number, opening hours and the area you actually serve. Compare your website with your Google Business Profile and correct conflicting information. Use your real-world business name, not a name padded with suburbs or search phrases.

Check that the person responsible for the business has access to the profile. Keep ownership under the business’s control and give collaborators appropriate access rather than sharing a password. Follow the verification options Google offers for your business; verification does not guarantee a particular position in search.

    • Confirm profile ownership and access.
    • Correct phone, website, hours and special hours.
    • Remove inaccurate or duplicate business information through Google’s supported processes.

Set your address and service area correctly

A business that receives customers at eligible premises and a business that travels to customers have different profile needs. Follow Google’s eligibility and address rules. If customers are not served at your business address, hide that address and use an accurate service area. An online-only business is not eligible simply because it serves local customers remotely.

List the areas you genuinely cover. Adding an area does not create a physical presence there or guarantee visibility in that location. Do not use a virtual office as a shortcut to a new map location. Choose the most accurate primary category and only additional categories that describe the business.

    • Check that the business is eligible for a profile.
    • Match the address display to how customers are served.
    • Select relevant categories and actual service areas.

Give each important service a useful website page

Before choosing phrases, write down the questions customers ask when they enquire. Then check the language used in Google results and, when available, your own Search Console queries. Look for a clear match between the service, the customer’s need and the location. Search volume alone does not tell you whether a phrase will bring suitable enquiries.

On each important service page, explain what the service covers, who it suits, where it is available and what the next step involves. Use a descriptive page title and heading. Link to the page from your services navigation. Avoid near-identical suburb pages that provide no useful local information.

A callout business may need a clear quotation or call route. An accounting firm or consultancy may need an initial consultation request and enough information to qualify an enquiry. Choose the next step that fits the service rather than forcing every visitor into the same journey.

    • Use customer language that accurately describes the service.
    • Answer scope, service-area and next-step questions.
    • Make important service pages reachable through ordinary links.

Check the path from search to enquiry

Open your website on a phone at normal browser settings. Follow the link from your business profile and check that it reaches the right page. Make sure the phone link works, the enquiry form is readable and the confirmation accurately describes what happened. Test with an authorised test entry and confirm it reaches the person handling enquiries.

Use Search Console to check specific important URLs if access is available. A sitemap helps Google discover URLs; submitting it is not a guarantee that every page will be indexed. If a page is missing, check whether it loads, permits indexing and has useful content and internal links before assuming it needs another submission.

    • Check the website and contact links on a phone.
    • Confirm enquiries reach the responsible person.
    • Review important URLs in Search Console rather than relying on sitemap counts.

Keep the profile useful and customer feedback genuine

Add accurate service details and real photos that help customers understand the business. Keep opening hours current and update special hours when necessary. Ask genuine customers neutrally for feedback, without incentives, pressure or selectively directing only happy customers to Google.

Respond professionally and avoid exposing personal or confidential customer information. For professional-service businesses, make sure any request or response follows applicable confidentiality obligations. Customer feedback is not a substitute for complete business information or a useful website.

    • Keep services, photos and hours accurate.
    • Use a consistent, neutral feedback request process.
    • Avoid incentives, review gating and confidential details in replies.

Measure enquiries, then choose your next improvement

Review the queries and pages reported in Search Console alongside profile interactions and the enquiries your team receives. Keep the measures separate: an impression is not a visit, a click is not an enquiry, and an enquiry is not a sale. Where tracking is available, connect it to the outcome your business cares about, such as a suitable consultation or quotation request.

Prioritise broken contact paths and inaccurate information first, then improve important service pages and enquiry handling. Google explains that local results mainly depend on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is not something a checklist can remove, and no provider can guarantee a map position.

    • Separate visibility, visits, enquiries and business outcomes.
    • Review enquiry quality as well as volume.
    • Fix the highest-impact issue and review the result before expanding the work.
